Meet Ted Williams,a.k.a The Golden Voice) a Brooklyn-born drifter from Columbus, Ohio who became a YouTube sensation after getting filmed on the street by Columbus Dispatch reporter Kevin Joy. The footage shows Williams panhandling narrating a radio promotional segment in the most soothing voice of a radio announcer.
Seeing a drifter with the sign "“I HAVE A GOD GIVEN GIFT OF VOICE. I’M AN EX-RADIO ANNOUNCER WHO HAS FALLEN ON HARD TIMES. PLEASE! ANY HELP WILL BE GREATEFULLY APPRECIATED. THANK YOU!”" will make you want to hear the man. The video quickly gained notoriety because of Mr. Williams’s deep and smooth voice (the video exceeded the 7 million views as of January 5th, 2011, two days after being uploaded). Conscious about his skill, he stated he was looking for a place in the radio entertainment industry.
The original YouTube video seems to initially spread from a Reddit thread on January 4th that has received over 3,000 upvotes.
According to the video’s latest update, “He’s being given offers hand-over-fist over the air”. USA Today reported that he has been offered a sports announcer position, housing, by the Cleveland Cavaliers.
He appeared on the Ohio radio station, WNCI 97.7, as a special guest. Parts of the interview can be found here.
